Mayor Chris Doherty Chairs March Campaign

American Red Cross Scranton Chapter

Scranton, PA, March 24, 2008—The Scranton Chapter of the American Red Cross is proud to announce Mayor Chris Doherty, Mayor of Scranton, as the Chair of the March Campaign. Mayor Doherty has been in office since 2001, heading the biggest transformation in Scranton with over $400 million being invested back into the city. Scranton’s change began with new construction, the rehabilitation of historic structures, and neighborhoods becoming revitalized. The Mayor’s accomplishments have been recognized by his peers with his election as President of the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities. He was also named one of the “Pennsylvania’s Best Mayors” by PoliticsPA.com

As a devoted husband and father, Mayor Doherty has always believed in giving back to the community. As the new honorary chairman, Mayor Doherty states, “Many of us have used the Red Cross and their services, whether it was in an emergency such as a home fire, using or learning a life saving skill (CPR), or a having been a recipient of blood.” He continues, “The American Red Cross is an influential organization that plays a vital role in our community. As March is American Red Cross Month, I believe now is the time to give back.”

For more than 92 years, the American Red Cross Scranton Chapter has been helping citizens of Lackawanna County prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Without the help of volunteers who constitute 97% of the total work force, financial contributions, and blood donations, the Scranton Chapter would not be able to fulfill their humanitarian mission. For more information on how to continue to make a difference in your community by making a financial contribution to the March campaign, please call 570-207-0109 or by mailing your contribution to 545 Jefferson Ave. Scranton PA 18510. All proceeds stay in Lackawanna County.

The American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters at home and abroad, collects and distributes nearly half of the nation's blood supply, teaches lifesaving skills, and supports military members and families. The American Red Cross, a charity and not a government agency, depends on voluntary contributions of time, money and blood to perform its humanitarian mission.
