American Red Cross Designates Scranton Chapter as

One of Top Performing in the Nation

Second Year in a Row

May 2, 2008 SCRANTON, PA—The Scranton Chapter, a participating agency of the United Way of Lackawanna County, has been named one of the best performing chapters in the United States by the American National Red Cross, headquartered in Washington D.C. The Scranton Chapter was in the top 10 percent out of total 756 chapters that were evaluated for fiscal year 2007.

All Red Cross chapters were evaluated on performance standards that measure activities and achievements levels in six different categories, including: governance, financial strength and stability, service delivery, human resources, business practices, organizational unity and American Red Cross corporate citizenship. In addition, surveys were distributed to local recipients of Red Cross services and the results were assessed as part of the chapter performance.

“This award is a result of the hard work and dedication from our chapter staff, our outstanding volunteers including members of our board, our generous donors and the support from the community,” said Bob Cherundolo, Chief Executive Officer of the Scranton Chapter. “It is indeed an honor to have received this award for the second consecutive year.”

The Scranton Chapter which is made up of 14 employees and hundreds of volunteers support Lackawanna County by providing lifesaving health and safety training, responding to disasters, assisting members of the military and their families, hosting life saving blood drives, and offering a variety of community service programs.

The American Red Cross provides relief to victims of disasters at home and abroad, collects and distributes nearly half of the nation’s blood supply, teaches lifesaving skills, and supports military members and families. The American Red Cross, a charity and not a government agency, depends on voluntary contributions of time, money and blood to perform its humanitarian mission.
