1. Why should I volunteer?

The American Red Cross relies on volunteers to do great things every day. Whether helping fellow local people prepare for emergencies, providing training in lifesaving skills, assisting victims of disasters, connecting families, or simply lending a helping hand to members of the community. Without our volunteers, there would be no Red Cross.

What do our volunteers say they get in return? Satisfaction. Fulfillment. Enrichment.  Gratification. A spirit of belonging and giving. The opportunity to do great things every day.

2. What is the time commitment required to volunteer?

Time commitments vary according to the area in which you choose to volunteer. Many volunteers work regular weekly or monthly shifts. Others chose to volunteer for a specific number of events during the year. To determine which opportunities best fit into your timetable, schedule an appointment to discuss volunteering opportunities with Theresa O' Connor at (570) 207-0112.

3. How do I start the process of becoming a volunteer?

To become a volunteer, please read the step-by-step guide to becoming a volunteer.

4. Are there internship opportunities available at the Red Cross?

There are a variety of internship opportunities available at the Lackawanna County Chapter, from emergency services to development. Opportunities and spaces depend on the time of year. All internships are unpaid, but give students an opportunity to gain experience in and an understanding of the day-to-day management of a non-profit organization. To find out about current internship opportunities, contact Charlotte Wright at (570) 207-0012.

5. Why do I have to complete a background check to volunteer?

Background checks have been an area of focus at the American Red Cross and encouraged for many years. Red Cross continues to reaffirm our accountability to the American public. The background check initiative will help us achieve a more efficient and safer work environment for our employees and volunteers.

6. Can I volunteer for disaster relief operations outside of the Lackawanna County Chapter area in the United States?

Yes, although you must have experience with disaster response as a local Red Cross volunteer. To acquire that experience, you must register, train and serve with your local chapter. If you live in the local area, you can begin this process by completing all parts of the step-by-step guide to becoming a volunteer
